성 베드로 대성당

성 베드로 대성당은 바티칸 시국 남동쪽에 있는 대성당을 말한다. 바티칸 대성당이라고도 부른다. 성지 가운데 하나이자 기독교 세계의 모든 교회 가운데 가장 거대한 교회로 유일무이한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 개신교를 제외한 기독교의 전승(애초에 개신교는 전승을 인정하지 않는다) 에 따르면, 서기 67년에 순교한 예수의 열두 제자 가운데 한 사람이자 로마의 초대 주교, 즉 교황 성 베드로의 무덤 위에 대성당을 건립했다고 한다.

St. Peter's Basilica

The Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican is an Italian Renaissance church in Vatican City, the papal enclave within the city of Rome. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world. While it is neither the mother church of the Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines.

피에타

피에타는 현재 바티칸 시국의 성 베드로 대성전에 보관되어 있는 르네상스 시대 조각 예술의 대표적인 명작품이다. 그의 많은 피에타 상 중에서 최초의 것으로, 당시 로마에 체류 중이었던 프랑스 추기경 장 드 빌레르의 의뢰로 만든 것이었다. 이 유명한 작품은 십자가에 매달려 죽은 후에 어머니인 성모 마리아의 무릎에 놓여진 예수 그리스도의 시신을 묘사한 것이다. 미켈란젤로의 피에타는 고전적인 아름다움을 강조한 르네상스 시대 당시의 이상과 자연주의의 균형을 이룸으로써 예술학적으로 매우 중요한 작품이다. 또한, 이 피에타상은 유일하게 미켈란젤로가 직접 자신의 이름을 새긴 작품이기도 하다.

Pieta

Pieta (1498–1499) is a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed.
