시스티나 성당

시스티나 성당은 바티칸 시국에 있는 교황의 관저인 사도 궁전 안에 있는 성당이다. 건축 양식이 타나크에 나오는 솔로몬의 성전에 근거를 두고 있다고 전하며, 미켈란젤로, 라파엘로, 산드로 보티첼리 등 르네상스 시대의 예술가들이 그린 프레스코 벽화가 구석구석에 그려져 있다.

Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope, in Vatican City. Originally known as the Cappella Magna, the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1477 and 1480. Since that time, the chapel has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today it is the site of the Papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected.

아담의 창조

아담의 창조(The Creation of Adam)는 미켈란젤로의 프레스코 시스티나 예배당 천장에 그려진 벽화의 하나이다. 하느님이 최초의 인간 아담에게 생명을 불어넣은 창세기 속 성경 이야기를 그리고 있다. 이 작품은 예배당 입구에서 출발하여 구약 이야기가 전개되는 중간 지점에 그려져 있는데, 이는 인간과 신이 함께 표현되는 양식을 과감히 창조적으로 표현하면서, 자신의 형상대로 인간을 만든 하나님의 창조적 힘과 인간이 만들어지는 감동적인 순간을 뛰어나게 형상화시킨 작품이다.

Sistine Chapel ceiling

The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art. The ceiling is that of the Sistine Chapel, the large papal chapel built within the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV, for whom the chapel is named. It was painted at the commission of Pope Julius II. The chapel is the location for papal conclaves and many other important services.

최후의 심판

1533년에 교황 클레멘스 7세의 명으로 시스티나 경당에 그려진 벽화로, 사코 디 로마를 비롯한 재난의 연속에 대한 분노의 감정을 달래기 위한 것이었다. 1534년 교황의 선종으로 이 작업은 일단 중지되었으나 클레멘스 7세의 뒤를 이어 교황이 된 바오로 3세가 다시 이 작업을 의뢰함으로써 결국 1541년에 면적 완성되었다.

The Last Judgment

The Last Judgment is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo covering the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The souls of humans rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints.
