마크 트웨인 (1835-1910)

새뮤얼 랭혼 클레먼스(Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835년 11월 30일 ~ 1910년 4월 21일)는 마크 트웨인(Mark Twain)이라는 필명으로 더욱 유명한 미국의 소설가이다. 주요 작품으로는 미시시피 강 유역을 배경으로 개구쟁이 소년인 톰 소여와 허클베리 핀의 모험을 그린 동화 《톰소여의 모험》이 있다.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1875) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel".

톰소여의 모험

19세기 미국 남부 미주리주에 있는, 가공의 마을인 세인트 피터즈버그를 배경으로 하고 있으며, 귀여운 말썽꾸러기 톰 소여의 익살맞은 모습을 통해 기성 세대를 조롱하는 것이 특징이다. 그 실례가 폴리 이모가 개구쟁이 조카 톰에게 울타리에 페인트 칠을 하게 한 설정이다. 톰은 순진한 친구들을 이용해서, 대신 페인트 칠을 하게 해놓고는, 마치 자기가 한 것인 양 폴리 이모 앞에서 뽐낸다. 폴리 이모는 조카의 귀여운 거짓말에 속아 넘어간다. 즉, 작가는 어린이가 어른을 속인다는 설정을 통해 기성 세대를 조롱하는 것이다. 시점은 등장 인물들의 심리 상태를 들여다보듯 서술한 전지적 시점이다.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. It is set in the 1840s in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived as a boy. In the novel Tom Sawyer has several adventures, often with his friend Huckleberry Finn. Originally a commercial failure, the book ended up being the best selling of any of Twain's works during his lifetime.

허클베리 핀의 모험

1851년 늦여름 미시시피 강. 증기선을 보며 남미를 여행할 꿈을 꾸는 남루한 차림의 소년 허클베리 핀과 흑인 노예 짐의 모험이 시작된다. 인종과 문화의 차이로 갈라져 있는 두 친구지만 자유분방한 헉 핀과 짐이 뗏목을 타고 미시시피 강을 표류하며 생애 최고의 이상한 여행을 떠난다. 그 속에서 짐은 헉에게 당시 사람들의 믿음과는 달리 모든 인간은 기본적으로 평등하며 존중되어야 함을 가르쳐 준다.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, the narrator of two other Twain novels and a friend of Tom Sawyer. It is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
