카르카손 역사도시

카르카손 시테성은 프랑스 남부 옥시타니 지역의 도시 카르카손에 위치한 중세 성곽 도시로, 유럽에서 가장 잘 보존된 중세 요새 가운데 하나다. 두 겹의 성벽과 수많은 성탑으로 둘러싸인 성곽 안에 중세 시대의 거리와 건축물이 그대로 남아 있어 마치 중세로 시간여행을 떠난 듯한 풍경을 보여준다. 성곽 내부에는 생 나제르 성당과 콩탈 성 등이 자리하고 있으며, 특히 거대한 성벽과 원뿔형 지붕의 탑들이 만들어 내는 모습이 카르카손을 대표하는 상징으로 꼽힌다. 중세 유럽의 요새 건축을 보여주는 뛰어난 사례로 인정받아 1997년 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재되었다.

Castle of Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a French fortified city in the department of Aude, in the region of Occitanie. A prefecture, it has a population of about 50,000. Inhabited since the Neolithic period, Carcassonne is located in the Aude plain between historic trade routes, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrénées. Its strategic importance was quickly recognized by the Romans, who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire.
