섬터 요새

섬터 요새는 미국 사우스캐롤라이나.주 중부에 있는 요새이다. 섬터라는 명칭은 토머서 섬터 장군의 이름에서 따온 것이지만, 남북 전쟁을 촉발 시켰던 섬터 요새 전투로 알려져 있다. 이 전투에서는 북군에서만 2명의 전사자가 속출하였는데, 이 병사들은 남군의 공격으로 죽은 것이 아니라 북군이 섬터 요새에서 철수하면서 쏜 예포 50발 중 한 발이 잘못 발사되어 죽은 것으로 알려져 있다.

Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter is a sea fort in Charleston, South Carolina, notable for two battles of the American Civil War. It was one of a number of special forts planned after the War of 1812, combining high walls and heavy masonry, and classified as Third System, as a grade of structural integrity. Work started in 1829, but was incomplete by 1860, when South Carolina seceded from the Union.

미국 남북 전쟁은 미국에서 일어난 내전이다. 1861년 4월, 노예제를 지지하던 남부주들이 모여 남부연합을 형성하며 미합중국으로부터의 분리를 선언한 뒤, 아메리카 남부 연합군이 사우스캐롤라이나.주 찰스턴 항의 섬터 요새를 포격하는 것으로 시작되어 1865년까지 4년 동안 벌어진 전쟁이다. 전쟁 결과 남부연합군이 패했고, 미국 전역에서 노예제가 폐지되는 중요한 계기가 되었다.

American Civil War

The American Civil War was a war  fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865. As a result of the long-standing controversy over slavery, war broke out in April 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, shortly after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated.
