게르니카 (피카소)

게르니카는 스페인 내전 당시 나치군이 스페인 게르니카 지역 일대를 1937년 4월 26일 24대의 비행기로 폭격하는 참상을 보고 파블로 피카소가 그린 그림의 이름이다. 독일군의 폭격으로 수많은 사람들이 희생되었으며 250~1,600명 그 이상의 사람들이 사망하였고 또한 부상당하였다.

Guernica is a mural-sized oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed in June 1937, at his home on Rue des Grands Augustins, in Paris. The painting, now in the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, was done with a palette of gray, black, and white, and is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history.

게르니카 폭격은 1937년 4월 26일, 스페인 내전 당시 인민 전선의 세력권에 있던 바스크 지방의 소도시 게르니카가 나치 독일 콘도르 군단 폭격부대의 폭격을 받은 사건으로, 도시 인구의 ⅓에 달하는 1654명의 사망자, 889명의 부상자가 발생했던 참사였다.

Bombing of Guernica

The bombing of Guernica (26 April 1937) was an aerial bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. It was carried out, at the behest of Francisco Franco's nationalist government, by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria, under the code name Operation Rügen.
