가시연꽃

1속 1종이며, 열매와 잎에 뾰족한 가시가 나 있어 가시연꽃이라고 명명되었다. 식물 전체에 가시가 나 있으며, 연잎의 지름은 약 100cm 정도 되는 것도 있고 광택이 있다. 수심이 깊지도 않고 얕지도 않은 곳에서 자라며, 일본, 만주, 중국, 인도 등지에 분포하며 우리 나라에는 남한과 북한에 각각 극소수가 남아 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

Euryale Ferox

Euryale ferox is the only extant species in the genus Euryale. It is a flowering plant classified in the water lily family, Nymphaeaceae, although it is occasionally regarded as a distinct family, Euryalaceae. Unlike other water lilies, the pollen grains of Euryale have three nuclei.
