마쓰마에 성

미개척의 땅 홋카이도에서 최초로 거주지가 만들어진 것은 홋카이 남단에 있는 츠가루해협의 면한 마츠마에. 13세기경 행정부가 놓인 이후 삿포로가 번창하는 19세기 중반까지 홋카이도의 정치·경제의 중심지였다. 홋카이도를 다스린 군주의 거성이었던 마츠마에성은 13~14세기경 축성을 시작하여 1600년대에 대규모 요새에 발전. 현재 재건된 마츠마에성은 1854년에 완성된 일본에서 마지막의 일본식 성곽이다.
