수마트라의 열대우림 지역

면적 2,500,000㏊에 이르는 수마트라의 열대우림 지역은 구눙레우서, 크린치 스블랏, 부킷 바리산 슬라탄의 세 국립공원으로 구성되어 있다. 멸종 위기 생물종을 비롯하여 수마트라 특유의 다양한 생물상을 장기간 보존하는 데 있어 큰 역할이 기대되는 곳이다. 이 보호 지역에는 17개의 고유속을 포함한 식물 10,000여 종과 포유동물 200여 종, 조류 580여 종의 서식지이다. 조류 중 465종이 텃새이며 21종은 고유종이다. 포유동물 중 22종은 인도네시아 군도내의 다른 곳에서는 발견되지 않는 아시아 종이며 고유종인 수마트라오랑우탄을 포함하여 15종은 인도네시아 지역에서만 발견되는 종이다. 이 지역은 섬의 진화에 대한 생물지리학적 증거도 제시하고 있다.

Gunung Leuser National Park

Gunung Leuser National Park is a national park covering 7,927 k㎡ in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, straddling the border of North Sumatra and Aceh provinces, a fourth portion and three-fourths portion, respectively. The national park, settled in the Barisan mountain range, is named after Mount Leuser (3,119 m), and protects a wide range of ecosystems. An orangutan sanctuary at Bukit Lawang is located within the park. Together with Bukit Barisan Selatan and Kerinci Seblat National Parks, it forms a World Heritage Site, the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.
