청도읍성

이 읍성은 청도군의 중앙부에 위치한 화양읍 선상지에 축성된 남고북저의 석축성으로 고려 때부터 있었다. 당시의 성곽은 석성과 토성을 혼합해서 쌓은 것으로 화양읍 서상리, 동상리, 교촌리를 둘러싸고 있던 것을 군수 김은휘에 의해 1590년(선조23) 착수하여 1592년(선조25)까지 석축형으로 고치고 성의 높이도 더 높이게 되었는데, 그러나 임진왜란 때 동·서·북문이 소실되고 성벽이 파괴되었다. 그 후 성벽의 수축과 문루의 재건이 있었으나, 일제강점기의 읍성 철거정책으로 다시 성벽이 헐리고 문루도 제거되었다. 또한 장관청, 아전청, 회계소, 동헌, 객사, 군기고 및 3개의 누각 등이 성 내부에 있었으나 지금은 대부분 허물어지고 철거되었다. 그러나 지방관아와 민가가 한 울타리 안에서 살았고, 성곽 기저 부분이 잘 남아있으며 기록도 전해지고 있는 청도읍성은 지방관아 및 읍성 연구에 귀중한 자료가 되고 있는 유적이다.

Cheongdoeupseong Fortress

This stone fortress existed since the Goryeo period and is located in Hwayang-eup, central Cheongdo-gun. It has a lower northern section and higher southern section. In those days, governmental agencies and residences were built within the same boundary, and the base of the fortress is still well preserved. Valuable records of the fortress have been passed down to this day and serve as a great resource in the study and research of Korean fortresses.
