브라마굽타 (598-668)

인도의 수학자이자 천문학자. 고대 인도 천문학의 중심지였던 우가인의 천문관장으로 지냈던만큼 당시 인도에서 가장 학식이 뛰어났던 학자였다. 숫자 0의 발견 및 연산 활용, 브라마굽타 공식의 업적이 있으며, 그의 책이 이슬람 세계를 거쳐 유럽으로 널리 퍼지게 되었다.

Brahmagupta (598-668)

Brahmagupta was an Indian mathematician and astronomer. He is the author of two early works on mathematics and astronomy: the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta, a theoretical treatise, and the Khaṇḍakhādyaka, a more practical text. Brahmagupta was the first to give rules to compute with zero. The texts composed by Brahmagupta were in elliptic verse in Sanskrit, as was common practice in Indian mathematics. As no proofs are given, it is not known how Brahmagupta's results were derived
