레이테만 전투 (1944.10)

미국이 일본 해군을 완전히 재기불능 상태로 만든 전투이자 일본 해군의 총력전. 그리고 전쟁사 최대 규모의 해전이었다. 태평양 전선 기간인 1944년의 필리핀 탈환전역 중 10월 22일에서 27일까지 벌어진 시부얀 해전, 수리가오 해전, 엔가노 곶 해전, 사마르 해전을 통틀어 말하는 함대결전급 해전이다. 야마토급, 나가토급, 아이오와급 전함 등 미국, 일본 둘 다 최신 거함들을 한데 끌고 나왔다. 이 해전은 레이테 만에서 벌어진 것이 아니나, 일본군의 목표가 레이테 만을 통해 상륙을 벌이려던 미군을 저지하는 것이었고 각 해전이 연관되어 있기에 레이테 만 해전으로 불리는 것이다.

Battle of Leyte Gulf (1944.10)

The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle of World War II and by some criteria the largest naval battle in history, with over 200,000 naval personnel involved. It was fought in waters near the Philippine islands of Leyte, Samar, and Luzon from 23 to 26 October 1944 between combined American and Australian forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), as part of the invasion of Leyte, which aimed to isolate Japan from the countries that it had occupied in Southeast Asia, a vital source of industrial and oil supplies.

MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park

The MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park is a protected area of the Philippines that commemorates the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf at the start of the campaign to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation on 20 October 1944. This event led to the largest naval battle of World War II and Japan's eventual defeat and surrender after almost three years.
