리처드 닉슨 (1913-1994)

닉슨은 캘리포니아의 가난한 농가에서 태어나 고학으로 변호사가 된 자수성가형 인물이다. 캘리포니아주를 기반으로 하는 연방 하원의원과 상원의원을 역임하였으며, 이후 제36대 미국의 부통령을 역임하였다. 1960년 케네디와의 대선에서 패배하며 정계 은퇴 위기에 몰리기도 했으나, 8년 뒤 화려하게 부활하며 백악관의 주인이 되었다. 대통령 재직 중에 베트남 전쟁을 종결짓고 '닉슨 독트린'을 통해 미국이 더 이상 세계 모든 분쟁에 직접 개입하지 않겠다고 선포하며 실용주의 외교를 펼쳤다. 또한 아폴로 11호의 달 착륙으로 우주 경쟁이 미국의 승리로 끝나는데 영향을 주었으며, 인종 차별 폐지에 힘썼다. 1972년 중국을 직접 방문하여 마오쩌둥과 손을 잡은 '죽의 장막' 돌파는 세계사를 바꾼 대사건이었다. 소련과 전략무기 제한 협정을 체결하여 핵전쟁의 위협을 줄이고 동서 화해 분위기를 조성했다. 그러나 1972년 대선을 앞두고 닉슨 측근들이 민주당 선거운동 본부(워터게이트 빌딩)에 도청 장치를 설치하려다 적발된 사건이 발생했다. 처음에는 관련성을 부인했으나, 이후 사건 은폐를 시도하고 수사를 방해했다는 증거가 담긴 녹음테이프가 공개되면서 그는 벼랑 끝으로 몰렸다. 결국 탄핵 직전이었던 1974년 8월 8일, 닉슨은 결국 TV 연설을 통해 사임을 발표했고 이는 미국 역사상 유일하게 임기 중 사임한 대통령이었다.

Richard Nixon (1913-1994)

Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as a representative and senator from California and as the 36th vice president from 1953 to 1961 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His presidency saw the reduction of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, détente with the Soviet Union and China, the Apollo 11 Moon landing, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Nixon's second term ended early when he became the only U.S. president to resign from office, as a result of the Watergate scandal.

The Richard Nixon Library & Museum

The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is the presidential library and burial site of Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th president of the United States (1969–1974), and his wife Pat Nixon. Located in Yorba Linda, California, on land that President Nixon's family once owned, the library is one of 13 administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The 9-acre (3.6 ha) campus is located at 18001 Yorba Linda Boulevard in Yorba Linda and incorporates the Richard Nixon Birthplace, a National Historic Landmark where Nixon was born in 1913 and spent his childhood.
