마외병변 (756)

...755년 양국충을 처단한다는 명분을 세워 동북 변방의 번장 안녹산이 대란을 일으켰다. 이듬해에는 안녹산의 군대가 수도 장안 가까이까지 치고 들어왔고 귀비와 황제 일행은 서쪽 마외역에 이르렀을 때 진현례와 호위 병사들의 양씨 일문에 대한 불만이 폭발하여 간신 양국충과 그 자매를 포함한 양씨 일족을 학살한 후 모든 사단의 원흉인 양귀비를 처단하지 않으면 더 이상 움직이지 않겠다고 황제에게 항의했다(마외병변). 물론 현종은 양귀비는 죄가 없다고 필사적으로 변호했지만 워낙 병사들의 기세가 드세어 도저히 달랠 수가 없었기에 결국 양귀비는 고력사의 도움을 받아 길가의 불당에서 목을 매어 자결했다.

Yang Guifei's Death (756)

Emperor Xuanzong then sent Gao Lishi to ask General Chen Xuanli for his advice. Chen's reply was to urge the Emperor to put Consort Yang to death. Initially the Emperor refused, but after Wei E and Gao Lishi spoke in agreement with Chen, the Emperor eventually agreed. He had Gao take Consort Yang to a Buddhist shrine and allow her a forced suicide, considered a more dignified death than execution. When Consort Yang's body was shown to Chen and the other imperial guard generals, the soldiers dispersed and prepared to continue the journey. Consort Yang was buried at Mawei, without a coffin, but with masses of fragrance wrapped in purple blankets.
