라지가트

라지가트는 간디 거리에 있는 간디의 화장터이다. 간디 기념 박물관을 포함하여 2개의 박물관이 함께 위치하고 있다. 라지가트는 1948년 1월 30일에 극우파 힌두 청년에게 암살당한 간디의 유해를 화장한 곳으로, 잔디밭 중앙에는 검은 대리석의 네모난 대좌가 있으며, 그 중앙에는 간디가 마지막으로 남긴 말인 ‘오 신이여!’가 새겨 있다.

Raj Ghat and associated memorials

Raj Ghat is a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi, India. Originally it was the name of a historic ghat of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad). Close to it, and east of Daryaganj was Raj Ghat Gate of the walled city, opening at Raj Ghat to the west bank of the Yamuna River. Later the memorial area was also called Raj ghat.

마하트마 간디 (1869.10.2-1948.1.30)

모한다스 카람찬드 간디는 인도의 정신적·정치적 지도자로, 마하트마 간디라는 이름으로 널리 알려져 있는데 '마하트마'는 위대한 영혼이라는 뜻으로 인도의 시인인 타고르가 지어준 이름이다. 영국 유학을 다녀왔으며, 인도의 영국 식민지 기간(1859~1948) 중 대부분을 영국으로부터의 인도 독립 운동을 지도하였다.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian activist who was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahātmā – applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa – is now used worldwide. In India, he is also called Bapu and Gandhi ji, and known as the Father of the Nation.
