사올라

사올라는 우제목에 속하는 포유류 중 하나이다. 베트남의 뷔 퀴앙 보호구역과 라오스에서만 서식하는 이 지역의 특유종이다. 이름은 "물레방아와 같은 뿔을 가진" 동물이라는 뜻이다. 사올라가 과학계에 알려진 것은 비교적 최근으로, 1992년 베트남에서 이상한 뿔이 나오는 것을 보고 과학자들은 이들의 존재를 확인하였다. DNA염기서열 분석에 의하면 이들은 사올라속의 유일한 종이며, 우제목/경우제목의 종과 연관이 있다. 기록된 개체는 11마리 뿐으로, 이들이 얼마나 남아있는지 여부는 알려져 있지 않다. 사육해서 종을 보전하려는 노력 또한 있었지만, 모두 새끼를 낳기 전에 죽어서 실패했다.

Saola

The saola, Asian unicorn, or infrequently, Vu Quang bovid, is one of the world's rarest large mammals, a forest-dwelling bovine native to the Annamite Range in Vietnam and Laos.
