클레르몽 공의회 (1095.11)

클레르몽 교회회의는 1095년 11월 18일부터 11월 28일까지 프랑스 클레르몽에서 성직자와 평신도의 합동 주재로 열렸던 로마 가톨릭교회의 교회회의이다. 이 교회회의를 주재한 교황 우르바노 2세는 11월 27일 되는 날, 공의회 연설에서 제1차 십자군 원정을 호소하였다.

Council of Clermont (1095.11)

The Council of Clermont was a mixed synod of ecclesiastics and laymen of the Catholic Church, called by Pope Urban II and held from 17 to 27 November 1095 at Clermont, Auvergne, at the time part of the Duchy of Aquitaine. Pope Urban's speech on 27 November included the call to arms that would result in the First Crusade, and eventually the capture of Jerusalem and the establishment of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

교황 우르바노 2세 (1035-1099)

가톨릭의 제159대 교황. 중세사에 큰 획을 그은 교황이자 십자군 전쟁을 일으킨 장본인. 프랑스인으로는 2번째 교황이다. 국내 세계사 교육 과정에는 라틴어 발음대로 우르바누스 2세로 표기된다. 클레르몽 공의회에서는 성지 탈환과 분열된 동방정교회와의 재일치를 주장하여, "하느님께서 원하신다!"다는 말과 함께 십자군 운동을 일으켰다. 우르바노 2세는 자신의 대리자로서 아데마르 주교를 십자군의 총사령관[3]으로 임명하였으나, 1차 십자군이 예루살렘을 탈환하기 2주일 전에 선종하였고 유해는 성 베드로 대성당에 매장되었다.

Pope Urban II (1035-1099)

Pope Urban II was the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 12 March 1088 to his death. He is best known for convening the Council of Clermont which ignited the series of Christian conquests known as the Crusades. Pope Urban was a native of France, and was a descendant of a noble family from the French commune of Châtillon-sur-Marne. Reims was the nearby cathedral school where he began his studies in 1050.
