미쓰이

미쓰비시 그룹, 스미토모 그룹과 함께 일본의 최대 기업 집단 중 하나. 태평양 전쟁 전 3대 재벌의 1위였던 미쓰이 재벌을 이은 기업 집단이다. 미쓰이 이름만으로는 외국에서 지명도가 높은 기업이 적으나, 산하에 일본 주식시장 시가총액 1위인 토요타를 포함하여, 도시바, 도레이, 후지필름 등의 유명 기업이 포진하고 있다. 미쓰이 그룹은 에도 시대의 거상인 미쓰이 다카토시(三井高利)로부터 시작된다. 지금의 미에현 마츠사카시 출신인 그는 1673년 교토와 에도에 에치고야라는 포목점을 열고 당시로는 파격적인 정찰제와 현금 거래를 내세웠다. 이걸 가리켜 일본어로 겐킨카케네나시라 하는데 오로지 현금으로만 거래를 하는 대신, 다른 상점보다 가격을 싸게 하여 팔았다. 또 비가 오면 고객에게 회사 이름이 새겨진 우산을 빌려주는 등 현대식 마케팅 기법을 도입하면서 성장을 거듭했다.

Mitsui

Mitsui Group is a Japanese corporate group and keiretsu that traces its roots to the zaibatsu groups that were dissolved after World War II. Unlike the zaibatsu of the pre-war period, there is no controlling company with regulatory power. Instead, the companies in the group hold shares in each other, but they are limited to exchanging information and coordinating plans through regular meetings. Founded by Mitsui Takatoshi (1622–1694), who was the fourth son of a shopkeeper in Matsusaka, in what became Mie prefecture. From his shop, called Echigoya, Mitsui Takatoshi's father originally sold miso and ran a pawn shop business. The family would later open a second shop in Edo (modern Tokyo).
