조르주 비제 (1838-1875)

조르주 비제는 프랑스의 작곡가로서, 대표작으로 《카르멘》이 있다. 가족과 친구들에게 Georges 라 불리고, 이 이름으로 알려져 있지만, 알렉산드르 세자르 레오폴(Alexandre César Léopold)이라는 본명이 따로 있었다.

Best known for his operas in a career cut short by his early death, Bizet achieved few successes before his final work, Carmen, which has become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the entire opera repertoire.

카르멘(Carmen)은 조르주 비제가 작곡한 4막의 오페라 코미크이다. 프로스페르 메리메의 동명의 이야기를 기초로 뤼도비크 알레비와 앙리 메이야크가 프랑스어 대본을 완성한 이 작품은 한 불같은 성격을 지닌 아름답고 유혹적인 집시 여인, 카르멘에 관한 이야기이다. 1875년 3월 3일 파리 오페라 코미크 극장에서 초연되었다.

Carmen is an opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalized its first audiences.
