불가촉천민

불가촉천민은 사회적 관습 또는 법적 구속에 의해 주류 인구와 분리 및 격리되는 집단이다. 인도의 달리트, 조선의 백정, 일본의 부라쿠민, 유럽의 카고 등이 불가촉천민에 해당한다. 대부분의 현대 국가에서 불가촉천민에 대한 차별은 법적으로 금지되어 있으나 아직도 편견과 차별이 암암리에 이루어지고 있다.

Dalit

Dalit, meaning "broken/scattered" in Sanskrit and Hindi, is a term mostly used for the castes in India that have been subjected to untouchability (often termed backward castes). Dalits were excluded from the four-fold varna system of Hinduism and were seen as forming a fifth varna, also known by the name of Panchama. Dalits now profess various religious beliefs, including Buddhism, Christianity and Sikhism.
