마디그라

마디 그라는 프랑스어로 '기름진 화요일(Fat Tuesday)'이라는 뜻으로, 금욕 기간인 사순절이 시작되기 전날에 마음껏 먹고 마시며 즐기던 전통에서 유래했다. 매년 부활절 일정에 따라 날짜가 바뀌지만, 공식적인 카니발 시즌은 항상 1월 6일에 시작된다. 축제의 열기는 '기름진 화요일' 당일로부터 약 2주 전부터 최고조에 달하며, 화요일 자정(재의 수요일 시작)이 되면 모든 축제가 마법처럼 종료된다. 마디 그라의 주인공은 '크루'라고 불리는 사회단체로. 이들은 1년 내내 화려한 테마의 수레를 준비하며, 축제 기간 내내 도심 곳곳에서 웅장한 퍼레이드를 펼친다. 렉스(Rex)나 줄루(Zulu) 같은 역사적인 크루들이 특히 유명하다. 퍼레이드 수레에 탄 사람들은 관객을 향해 색색의 플라스틱 목걸이나 기념 주화, 장난감 등을 던져주는 것은 마디 그라의 가장 큰 재미다.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, refers to events of the Carnival celebration, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday (known as Shrove Tuesday). Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.
