라 브레아 타르 연못(영어: La Brea Tar Pits)은 미국 로스 앤젤레스의 행콕 파크 지역에 형성된 타르 웅덩이들이다. 라 브레아 타르 웅덩이들은 미국의 국립 자연 랜드마크로 등록되었으며, 또한 전 세계에서 가장 유명한 빙하기 화석들의 발굴지이기도 하다.

La Brea Tar Pits

The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed in urban Los Angeles. Natural asphalt (also called asphaltum, bitumen, pitch or tar—brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, the tar preserved the bones of trapped animals.

빙하기

빙하기(氷河期, 영어: ice age)는 지구의 기온이 오랜 시간 동안 하강하여 남북 양극과 대륙, 산 위의 얼음층이 확장되는 시기를 의미한다. 빙하학적으로는 빙하기라는 말은 남반구와 북반구에 빙상이 확장한 특정 시기를 의미하며, 이 정의에 의하면 그린란드와 남극의 빙상이 존재하는 현재도 지구는 빙하기에 있는 것이다. 과거 수백만 년 전의 빙하기는 일반적으로 북아메리카와 유럽 대륙으로 빙상이 확대된 한랭기를 가리킨다.

Ice age

An ice age is a period of long-term reduction in the temperature of Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Within a long-term ice age, individual pulses of cold climate are termed "glacial periods" (or, alternatively, "glacials" or "glaciations", or colloquially "ice ages"), and intermittent warm periods are called "interglacials".
