12사도 바위

그레이트 오션 로드의 상징인 12사도 바위는 남극해의 거센 파도와 바람이 빚어낸 자연의 걸작이다. 이 바위들은 원래 해안 절벽의 일부였으나 파도와 침식 작용으로 절벽이 무너지면서 바다 위에 독립된 기둥 형태로 남게 되었다. 이름은 '12사도'이지만, 현재 해수면 위로 솟아 있는 주요 바위 기둥은 7개다. 원래 9개였다고 알려졌으나 2005년과 2009년에 각각 큰 기둥이 붕괴되었다. 1950년대 이전까지 이 바위들은 '엄마 돼지와 아기 돼지들 (Sow and Piglets)'라고 불렸지만 관광객을 유치하기 위해 성경 속 인물들의 이름을 딴 '12사도'라는 멋진 이름으로 바뀌게 되었다.

The Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. Their proximity to one another has made the site a popular tourist attraction. There are eight Apostles left, the ninth having collapsed dramatically in July 2005.
