몬세라트 수도원

몬세라트 수도원은 스페인 카탈루냐 지방의 바르셀로나에서 약 50km 떨어진 몬세라트산에 자리한 베네딕토회 수도원으로, 카탈루냐를 대표하는 종교·문화 명소 가운데 하나이다. 톱니처럼 뾰족하게 솟은 독특한 기암괴석으로 이루어진 몬세라트산의 절경 속에 수도원이 자리하고 있어 아름다운 자연과 역사적인 건축물이 어우러진 풍경으로 유명하다. 수도원 내부에는 카탈루냐의 수호성인으로 여겨지는 검은 성모상인 '라 모레네타(La Moreneta)'가 모셔져 있어 많은 순례자와 관광객이 찾고 있으며, 유럽에서 가장 오래된 소년 합창단 중 하나로 알려진 에스콜라니아의 성가도 유명하다. 몬세라트라는 이름은 카탈루냐어로 '톱니 모양의 산'이라는 뜻에서 유래했으며, 수도원과 기암괴석이 어우러진 독특한 경관 덕분에 스페인을 대표하는 종교 관광지이자 자연 명소로 손꼽힌다.

Montserrat Abbey

Santa Maria de Montserrat is an abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict located on the mountain of Montserrat in Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain. It is notable for enshrining the image of the Virgin of Montserrat. The monastery was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt between 19th and 20th centuries, and still functions to this day, with over 70 monks.
