피라냐
피라냐 또는 피라니아는 남아메리카에 사는 육식성 민물고기이다. 파쿠와 비슷해 혼동할 수 있다. 종종 아랫이빨이 매우 큰 카쇼로라는 육식어종이 이 피라니아과와 혼동되기도 하나 같은 목이지만 엄연히 다른 어종이다. 물고기는 물론 큰 포유동물들도 잡아먹는다. 유럽인들이 피라냐에 대해서 알게 된 이유도 16세기 에스파냐 침략자들이 남아메리카 여행을 하면서 말을 백골로 만들어버릴 정도로 왕성한 피라냐의 식성에 공포를 느꼈기 때문이다.

Piranha
A piranha or piraña, a member of family Characidae in order Characiformes, is a freshwater fish that inhabits South American rivers, floodplains, lakes and reservoirs. Although often described as extremely predatory and mainly feeding on fish, their dietary habits vary extensively and they will also take plant material, leading to their classification as omnivorous.
