Valldemossa Charterhouse

The Valldemossa Charterhouse is a palace in Valldemossa, Majorca that was residence of the king Sancho of Majorca former royal residence and Royal Charterhouse....In the cells there are the documents and memories of the stay of the musician Frederic Chopin and the writer George Sand the winter of the years 1838-1839. In the cell 4 Chopin composed his Preludes Op. 28 and Sand wrote A Winter in Majorca.

프레데리크 쇼팽 (1810-1849)

1836년 마리 다굴 백작 부인이 연 파티에서 쇼팽은 소설가이자 애인인 조르주 상드를 만났다. 쇼팽과 상드의 연애관계는 1830년대 후반에 시작되었다. 그들의 애정 관계는 9년간 지속되었고, 쇼팽의 건강 악화와 상드의 자녀들 문제로 헤어졌다. 쇼팽과 조르주 상드는 스페인 마요르카의 버려진 로마 가톨릭교회 수도원인 발데모사수도원 근처의 오두막에서 지낸 적이 있는데, 1838년 ~ 1839년 겨울에는 혹독한 추위가 닥쳤다. 쇼팽은 파리에서 먼 길을 거쳐 피아노를 가져와서 언덕에 있는 수도원으로 옮겨야만 했다. 쇼팽은 그 절박한 시간의 기분을 스물 네 개의 전주곡(작품번호 28)에 담았다. 그 작품의 대부분은 마요르카에서 쓰여진 것이다. 추위는 쇼팽의 건강과 폐병에 큰 타격을 주었고, 그와 조르주 상드의 관계가 불륜으로 의심받아 비난과 푸대접을 받았다. 결국 파리로 돌아가야만 했다. 쇼팽은 그 일 이후로 건강을 회복하지 못했다.

Frederic Chopin (1810-1849)

The two spent a miserable winter on Majorca (8 November 1838 to 13 February 1839), where, together with Sand's two children, they had journeyed in the hope of improving the health of Chopin and that of Sand's 15-year-old son Maurice, and also to escape the threats of Sand's former lover Félicien Mallefille. After discovering that the couple were not married, the deeply traditional Catholic people of Majorca became inhospitable, making accommodation difficult to find. This compelled the group to take lodgings in a former Carthusian monastery in Valldemossa, which gave little shelter from the cold winter weather.

조르주 상드 (1804-1876)

파리에서 태어나 4세 때 아버지를 여의고 중부 프랑스의 베리주 노앙에서 할머니 손에서 자랐다. 루소를 좋아하는 고독한 소녀 시절을 보냈다. 16세 때 지방의 귀족인 뒤드방 남작과 결혼하였으나 행복한 결혼 생활은 오래 가지 못하고, 1831년 두 아이를 데리고 집을 나와 파리로 옮겼다. 1832년 친구의 권유로 신문소설 '앵디아나'를 써서 일약 유명해지면서부터 남장 차림의 여인으로 문인들 사이에 끼어 문필활동을 계속하였다. 그의 자유 분방한 생활은 남들의 이목을 집중시켰으며, 특히 시인 뮈세와 음악가 쇼팽과의 모성적인 연애사건은 너무나도 유명하다.

George Sand (1804-1876)

In Majorca one can still visit the (formerly abandoned) Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa, where she spent the winter of 1838–1839 with Chopin and her children. This trip to Majorca was described by her in Un hiver à Majorque, first published in 1841. Chopin was already ill with incipient tuberculosis at the beginning of their relationship, and spending a winter in Majorca—where Sand and Chopin did not realize that winter was a time of rain and cold and where they could not get proper lodgings—exacerbated his symptoms.
