성 요한 (6-100)

요하난 (6년경 ~100년경)은 사도이며, 특히 예수 그리스도의 열두 제자 가운데 한 사람이다. 대야고보와 형제 관계로 알려져 있다. 이름의 뜻은 ‘주님께서는 은혜로우시다’이다. 복음서를 기록한 인물로서 요한의 기쁜 소식와 요한 서신, 예수 그리스도의 계시의 저자로도 알려져 기독교의 성인으로, 로마 가톨릭교회에서의 축일은 12월 27일이며, 동방 정교회에서의 축일은 5월 8일이다.

John the Apostle

John the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament, which refers to him as Ἰωάννης. Generally listed as the youngest apostle, he was the son of Zebedee and Salome or Joanna. His brother was James, who was another of the Twelve Apostles.

성 요한 수도원과 파트모스 섬 요한계시록 동굴

도데카네스 제도(Prefecture of Dodecanese)에 있는 작은 섬 파트모스(Pátmos)는 성 요한이 요한복음과 요한계시록을 집필한 곳으로 알려져 있다. 10세기 말에 ‘사랑하는 제자(beloved disciple)’ 요한을 기리는 수도원이 건립된 이후 이 섬은 그리스 정교회의 순례지가 되었다. 마을 정상에 우뚝 선 수도원은 수려한 섬의 경관을 지배하며, 섬의 중심지였던 호라(Chorá)의 마을에는 옛 종교적 건축물과 세속의 가옥이 많이 남아 있다.

The small island of Pátmos in the Dodecanese is reputed to be where St John the Theologian wrote both his Gospel and the Apocalypse. A monastery dedicated to the ‘beloved disciple’ was founded there in the late 10th century and it has been a place of pilgrimage and Greek Orthodox learning ever since. The fine monastic complex dominates the island.
