이효석 (1907-1942)

이효석은 일제강점기에 활동한 한국의 대표적인 소설가이다. 그의 작품은 화려한 수사가 아니라 섬세한 묘사·감각적 언어·자연 친화적 이미지로 채워져 있다. 특히 향기, 빛, 공기, 색 등 감각적 요소를 활용해 독자가 장면을 생생하게 느끼게 하는 특징이 있다. 대표작 <메밀꽃 필 무렵>은 봉평 장터와 흐드러진 메밀꽃밭을 배경으로 허생원과 동이의 만남을 그린 작품으로, 한국 단편문학의 정점으로 평가된다. 서정적 자연 묘사와 인물의 내면이 아름답게 어우러져 한국인의 정서와 감수성을 대표하는 작품으로 자리 잡았다. 1942년 폐질환으로 35세의 젊은 나이에 사망했다. 그의 고향인 강원도 평창군 봉평면에는 소설의 배경이 된 이효석 문학관과 효석 문화 마을이 조성되어 있다.

Lee Hyoseok (1907-1942)

Lee wrote more than 70 pieces of fiction and first attracted attention of the literary world in 1928 when his story City and Ghost was published in Light of Korea. Lee published many other works including Unanticipated Meeting, Shattered Red Lantern and At Sea Near Russia, all of which reflected his socialist sympathies.

이효석 문학관

남안교를 건너 물레방앗간 뒷산 중턱에 자리잡고 있으며, 생가터 가는 길목이기도 하다. 오랜 기다림 끝에 2002년 9월 7일 제4회 효석문화제 기간 중 문을 연 이효석 문학관에는 선생님의 작품 일대기와 육필원고 유품 등을 한눈에 볼수 있다. 전시되는 육필원고와 유품 등은 가산문학 선양회를 중심으로 이루어졌으며 지난 5월 25일 해마다있는 선생님 추모식에는 미국에 있는 장남(이우현)가족과 차녀가 참석하여 소장하고 있던 선생님의 육필원고와 훈장증을 기증하기도 했다.

Lee Hyoseok Literary Hall

Lee Hyo-seok Memorial Hall was opened on September 7, 2002 during the Hyoseok Cultural Festival, to celebrate the literary contributions and display artifacts from the life of Lee Hyo-seok (pen name Gasan). Many of the artifacts on display came from the Gasan Literature Group but some items were also donated from the children of Lee Hyo-seok to commemorate the passing of their father.

효석문화제 (9월)

<효석문화제>는 현대 단편소설의 대표작인 「메밀꽃 필 무렵」의 작품배경지인 봉평에서 자연과 문학이 함께하는 축제로 메밀과 소설의 내용을 담은 다채로운 행사로 축제를 찾은 관광객들의 눈과 귀를 즐겁게 해준다. <효석문화제>는 백일장을 비롯해 시화전, 문학의 밤과 같은 문학 프로그램, 소설 「메밀꽃 필 무렵」에 등장하는 메밀꽃밭 둘러보기, 봉숭아 물들이기 체험 등의 자연 프로그램, 전통 메밀 음식 만들기, 민속 놀이 체험 프로그램 등으로 이루어진다. 이 외에도 주변에 있는 이효석 생가, 이효석 문학 전시관 등 둘러볼 수 있는 곳이 많이 있다.

Hyoseok Cultural Festival

Hyoseok Cultural Festival is held to commemorate modern Korean writer Lee Hyo-seok and his popular novel "When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom," which demonstrates the connection between human life and the beauty of nature through the dazzling scenery of Bongpyeong. In fact, Bongpyeong is the author's hometown, and appears frequently in his novels. The cultural festival commemorates Lee Hyo-seok's novel and offers a chance for visitors to tour Lee Hyo-seok's birthplace and memorial hall.
