올림픽을 개최한 런던은 1908년, 1948년 대회에 이어서 근대 올림픽 역사상 최초로 세 번이나 올림픽을 치른 도시가 되었다. 이번 올림픽의 중심 테마는 친환경적인 올림픽이었다. 2012년 하계 올림픽에는 총 204개국의 국가가 참가했으며, 10,000명 이상의 선수들이 참여했다. 미국의 수영 선수인 마이클 펠프스가 이 대회에서 7개 종목에 출전해 4개의 금메달과 2개의 은메달을 획득하여 올림픽 역사상 가장 많은 금메달을 딴 선수가 되었다.

The 2012 Summer Olympics was an international multi-sport event that was held from 27 July to 12 August 2012 in London, United Kingdom. The first event, the group stage in women's football, began on 25 July at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, followed by the opening ceremonies on 27 July. 10,768 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated.
