전봉준 (1855-1895)

전봉준은 조선의 농민 운동가이자 동학의 종교 지도자였다. 동학 농민 운동 당시의 남접의 지도자이기도 했다. 별명이었던 녹두장군(綠豆將軍)으로 불리기도 하는데, 키가 작아 붙여진 별명이다. 1894년 3월 21일 전봉준은 선두로 나서 수백 명의 동학교도를 이끌고 만석보를 파괴하고 고부 관아를 공격하게 되며, 이를 고부 봉기, 제1차 봉기라 한다. 이에 놀란 군수 조병갑은 줄행랑을 놓았고, 전봉준은 관아의 무기를 탈취하고 세금을 가난한 농민들에게 나누어주며, 부패한 관리들을 붙잡았다.

Jeon Bongjun (1855-1895)

In 1894 Jeon Bong Jun and other farmers pleaded with a Local magistrate of Jeolla Province to lift the heavy (and some say illegal) taxes and to return extorted property taken from people accused of unsubstantiated crimes. Jeon Bong Jun and the others were ultimately rejected. In reaction to this rejection he, along with other farmers, revolted and attacked the county office and threatened to punish corrupt officials if they did not cease all corruption.

전봉준 유적

이 건물은 일명 녹두장군인 전봉준 선생이 동학운동(東學運動)을 일으킬 당시 거주하였던 집이다. 전봉준 선생은 조선왕조(朝鮮王朝) 철종(哲宗) 6년(1855)에 이 지방의 양반 가문에서 출생, 고종(高宗) 27년(1890) 동학에 입도하였으며, 서당(書堂) 훈장(訓長)으로 있었다.

동학농민혁명기념관

1894년 반부패·반봉건·반외세의 기치를 들고 봉기한 전봉준·김개남·손화중 등 수만의 無名동학농민군이 전주감영에서 파견한 관군을 크게 이긴 최초의 전승지로, 향후 고부민란이 동학농민혁명으로 나아가는데 결정적 역할을 한 성지로 이를 추모 및 기념하기 위한 공간으로 조성하였다. 역사상 최초의 농민봉기탑인 갑오동학혁명기념탑과 동학농민혁명 관련 각종 교육 및 행사를 담당하는 교육관이 있다.

Donghak Peasants Revolution Memorial Hall

The Donghak Peasants Revolution Memorial Hall was opened on May 11, 2004 in Donghak-ro, Deokcheon-myeon (in Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do Province) near the Hwangto-hyeon Battlefield where the Donghak peasants rose up against corrupt public officials.

동학 농민 운동 (1894-1895)

동학 농민 운동은 1894년 동학 지도자들과 동학 교도 및 농민들에 의해 일어난 백성의 무장 봉기를 가리킨다. 크게 1894년 음력 1월의 고부 봉기(제 1차)와 음력 4월의 전주성 봉기(제 2차)와 음력 9월의 전주·광주 궐기(제 3차)로 나뉜다.

Donghak Peasant Revolution (1894-1895)

The Donghak Peasant Revolution Peasant Revolt of 1894, Gabo Peasant Revolution, and a variety of other names, was an armed rebellion in Korea led by aggravated peasants and followers of the Donghak religion, a panentheistic religion viewed by many rebels as a political ideology. In 1894, the magistrate of Gobu, Jo Byeonggap, had created various bogus laws and forced the peasants to build reservoirs and settle in unowned lands in order to get rich from taxes and fines.
