쩐흥다오 (1228-1300)

베트남 쩐 왕조의 초대 황제 태종의 형인 진류의 아들이다. 본명은 진국준이고, 흥도는 후에 그 공적을 칭송하여 주어진 호칭이다. 처음에는 조정의 실권을 잡고 있던 진수도에 의해서 아버지 진류가 실각당하고 조정과 대립하던 시기도 있었지만, 지용이 뛰어난 인물로 후에는 장군으로 중용되었다. 1287년 말 원의 군대가 다시 처들어오자 쩐흥다오는 군사를 탕롱성에서 철수시키고 원의 보급선을 격파시킨 다음 바익당강 바닥에 말뚝을 박고 썰물이 될때까지 기다린 후 원나라의 함선을 궤멸(바익 당 전투)시켰다. 이에 원의 군대는 퇴각하였다.

Tran Hung Dao (1228-1300)

Born PrinceTran Hung Dao, he commanded the Dại Viet armies that repelled two out of three major Mongol invasions in the 13th century. His multiple victories over the Yuan Dynasty under Kublai Khan are considered among the greatest military feats in Vietnamese history. The Mongol forces were successful on land, but they struggled heavily with heat and disease; in addition to these factors, inexperience at naval warfare in 1287 rendered them incapable of occupying the country for good. Furthermore, General Tran Hung Dao’s military prowess has been reflected in many warfare treatises that he authored.
