말목 말과에 속하는 포유류. 어깨높이 142~152cm의 경종마[light horse]. 정온종[warm blood]이며, 몸빛은 흑색·흑갈색·밤색·황색·회색·적갈색·얼룩무늬·팔로미노(palomino, 갈기와 꼬리는 흰색이고 털은 크림색이나 황금색인 말)이다. 북아메리카의 목초지와 황야 등에 서식하는 야생마이다.
