상팔담(上八潭)

금강산 비로봉에서 동쪽의 구룡대 아래는 화강암으로 된 계곡에 크고 작은 못들이 층층으로 여러 개 있는데 그 중에 큰 것 8개를 ‘팔담’이라고 하며, 구룡동의 웃골에 있기 때문에 묘향산의 만폭동에 있는 팔담과 구별하기 위하여 상팔담이라고 부른다. 골짜기 아래에서 부딪치는 물소리는 아름답다고 느낄 정도이다. 더욱이 안개구름이 있는 날이면 절벽을 휘감으며 피어 오르는 실안개 같은 구름들이 상팔담과 산을 감싸고 있어 더욱 아름답다.

Sangpaldam

There are many ponds of various sizes along the different layers of granite valleys. A series of eight large ponds is collectively referred to as the Paldam or Sangpaldam. The Sangpaldam sits above the Guryong Pokpo Waterfall in Outer Geumgang and encircles the huge Satgatbong Peak. When there are low-level stratus clouds overhead, visitors can see strings of thin mist and fog surrounding the eight ponds and the peak itself. The water from the ponds forms the Guryong Pokpo and the Biryong Pokpo waterfalls and flows through the Oknyudong Valley and finally into the East Sea. One myth says that eight heavenly maidens came down from the sky and bathed in the ponds. Indigo water in the ponds and the clouds around them create a wonderful view.
