페르디난드 마젤란 (1480-1521)

페르디난드 마젤란는 포르투갈 출신의 항해가, 탐험가이다. 유럽인들에겐 새로운 대륙인 아메리카 대륙이 발견되고 지중해와 중동지방을 거쳐가던 육상 무역로 외에 새로운 동방항로에 대한 탐구가 한참이던 시절, 역사서에서는 처음으로 대서양과 태평양을 횡단한 것으로 기록에 남은 인물이다.

Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521)

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who organised the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth, which was completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano. Born around 1480 into a family of minor Portuguese nobility, Magellan became a skilled sailor and naval officer and was in service of the Portuguese crown in Asia. After King Manuel I of Portugal refused to support his plan to reach India by a new route, by sailing around the southern end of the South American continent, he was eventually selected by King Charles I of Spain to search for a westward route to the Maluku Islands.
