전태일 (全泰壹, 1948-1970)

전태일은 대한민국의 봉제 노동자이자 반공주의 성향의 노동운동가, 인권 운동가이다. 1960년대 평화시장 봉재공장의 재봉사, 재단사로 일하며 노동자의 권리를 주장하였다. 아버지가 사기를 당하여 정규 교육을 받지 못하고 서울로 올라와 청계천 피복 공장에 취직하였다. 1965년에는 청계천내 삼일회사 재봉사로 일하다가 강제 해고된 여공을 돕다가 함께 해고되었다. 이후 한미사의 재단보조로 있다가 재단사가 사장과의 갈등으로 해고되자, 그가 재단사가 되었다. 1968년 근로기준법의 존재를 알게 되어 1969년 7월부터 노동청을 방문, 노동자들의 열악한 환경 개선과 위생 환경 개선을 요구하였으나 번번히 거절당했다.

Jeon Taeil (1948-1970)

Jeon Tae-il was a South Korean sewing worker and workers' rights activist who committed suicide by burning himself to death at the age of 22 in protest at the poor working conditions of South Korean factories. His death brought attention to the substandard labor conditions and helped the formation of labor union movement in South Korea.

전태일기념관

서울시는 청년 전태일이 활동했고 분신 항거로 새로운 시대를 열었던 청계천에 아름다운청년 전태일기념관을 세웠다. 전태일을 따르며 전태일처럼 살기로 하는 모든 분들의 염원이었다. 1981년 전태일기념관건립추진위원회가 발족하여 전태일 평전을 펴내면서 오늘에 이르도록 꿈을 키워왔다. 많은 어려움이 있었지만 함께 꾼 꿈이었기에 현실이 됐다.

Jeon Tae-il Memorial Hall

Having been built by the Seoul city government, the Jeon Tae-il Memorial Hall is a labor complex facility erected to illuminate upon the historical significance of Jeon Tae-il, whose self-sacrifice served as a pivotal point in time in the history of the Korean labor movement. The young man gave everything he had to create a world that centered itself around the mentality that workers are people that have the right to live, work, and study in good health. In order to help bring Jeon Tae-il's dream into fruition, the hall urges unity between the labor force, the youth of the country, and the public, brought together around the ideals of love and solidarity.
