통곡의 벽

현재 있는 통곡의 벽은 제2성전의 서쪽 벽이다. 뿌리를 잃은 유대인들이 그나마 남은 성전의 서쪽 벽에 모여 통곡하였기에 통곡의 벽이란 이름이 붙었다고 한다. 예루살렘이 함락될 당시 벽이 진짜로 눈물을 흘렸다는 전설에서 따온 이름이란 설도 있다. 그들의 오랜 숙원은 풀렸지만, 아직도 많은 유대인들은 이곳을 찾아 기도를 올린다. 현재 통곡의 벽은 유대인의 성지이자 세계적인 관광명소가 되었다. 지상에 있는 부분은 상부이고 하부는 지하에 묻혔으니 가이드를 대동해서 지하도로 내려가보는 것도 좋다. 전쟁을 여러 차례 겪는 과정에서 예루살렘은 과거의 잔해 위에 재건되기를 반복하였다. 때문에 현재 지하에는 과거 지상이었던 부분의 유적 등이 많이 남아있다.

Western Wall

The Western Wall is an ancient limestone wall in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a relatively small segment of a far longer ancient retaining wall, known also in its entirety as the "Western Wall". The wall was originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple begun by Herod the Great, which resulted in the encasement of the natural, steep hill known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount, in a huge rectangular structure topped by a flat platform, thus creating more space for the Temple itself, its auxiliary buildings, and crowds of worshipers and visitors.
