세필록 오랑우탄 재활센터

1964년에 설립된 이곳은 불법 포획되거나 어미를 잃은 고아 오랑우탄, 그리고 다친 야생 오랑우탄들을 구조해 육체적·정신적 치료를 돕는 곳이다. 단순한 동물원이 아니라, 최종적으로 이들이 스스로 야생으로 돌아가 독립적인 삶을 살 수 있도록 돕는 재활의 공간이라는 점에서 큰 의미를 지닌다. 약 4,300헥타르에 달하는 광활한 카빌리-세필록 삼림 보호구역 내에 자리 잡고 있어, 오랑우탄들이 철창에 갇히지 않고 울창한 열대우림 속을 자유롭게 오가며 살아갈 수 있도록 조성되어 있다. 먹이 주기와 관람: 매일 정해진 시간에 숲속에 마련된 나무 연단으로 관리인들이 바나나와 우유 등의 먹이를 주러 나오는데, 이때 오랑우탄들이 숲에서 나와 먹이를 먹는 모습을 관광객들이 안전하게 관찰할 수 있다.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

The centre opened in 1964 as the first official orangutan rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or kept as pets. The orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready. The sanctuary is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which covers an area of 4,294 ha (10,610 acres), much of which is virgin rainforest. Today around 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve.
