호르헤 루이스 보르헤스 (1899-1986)

연작 형태의 짤막한 이야기들로 구성된 독특한 소설 《픽션들》로 유명하다. 부에노스아이레스에서 태어나 1920년대에 ‘도시의 아방가르드(남아메리카에서 일어난 극단적인 모더니즘 운동)’를 주도하였다. 1930년대에는 단편 소설을 다양하게 발전시키는 등 주로 산문을 쓰면서 문학 세계의 영역을 확장해 나갔다. 이러한 노력은 작품집 《픽션들》(1940)과 《알레프》(1949)로 결실을 맺었다. 그는 시와 논픽션, 이야기체의 수필 등 여러 장르를 넘나드는 다양한 작품들을 발표했다. 후기 작품 중에서 《칼잡이들의 이야기》(1970)는 여러 가지 방법으로 이해할 수 있다는 점에서 많은 관심을 불러일으켰다.

Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986)

Born in Buenos Aires, Borges later moved with his family to Switzerland in 1914, where he studied at the Collège de Genève. The family travelled widely in Europe, including Spain. On his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals. He also worked as a librarian and public lecturer. In 1955, he was appointed director of the National Public Library and professor of English Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. He became completely blind by the age of 55. Scholars have suggested that his progressive blindness helped him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination.
