성 밖 성 바울 대성당

성 밖 성 바오로 대성당은 로마의 4대 성전 가운데 하나이다. 대성당은 로마 황제 콘스탄티누스 1세가 주도하여 성 바오로가 순교하고 묻혔다고 전해지는 장소 위에 세워졌다. 386년 황제 테오도시우스 1세 치세에 중랑과 더불어 네 개의 측랑과 익랑이 추가되면서 대성당을 좀 더 크고 아름다운 대성당이 지어졌다.

사도 바울 (5?-64?)

파울로(바울)는 초기 기독교의 전파와 신학에 주춧돌을 놓은 사도이며, 신약성서의 상당 부분을 차지하는 파울로스 서신을 저술했다고 전해지는 인물이다. 스데반의 순교 이후 기독교인들을 본격적으로 박해하기 위해서 대제사장의 권한을 받아 다마스쿠스에 가던중 예수의 나타남을 보고 그의 음성을 듣게 되었고, 이후 예수의 제자 아나니아에게 세례를 받았다. 64년 네로 황제의 기독교 박해로 순교하였다.

Paul the Apostle, commonly known as Saint Paul and also known by his Jewish name Saul of Tarsus, was an apostle who taught the gospel of Christ to the first century world. Paul is generally considered one of the most important figures of the Apostolic Age and in the mid-30s to the mid-50s AD he founded several churches in Asia Minor and Europe.
