미국 항공 우주국은 미국의 국가 기관으로서 우주 계획 및 장기적인 일반 항공 연구 등을 실행하고 있다. 1957년 10월 4일 소비에트 연방의 세계 최초의 인공위성 스푸트니크 1호의 발사 성공에 스푸트니크 충격을 받은 미국은 1958년 7월 29일 NASA를 발족시켰다. 산하 시설로 케네디 우주센터, 고다드 우주 비행 센터, 제트 추진 연구소, 존슨 우주 센터, 랭글리 연구 센터, 마셜 우주 비행 센터 등이 있다.
