궁예 (869-918)

궁예는 후삼국시대의 군주이자 태봉을 세운 인물로, 신라 왕족의 후예로 알려져 있다. 9세기 후반 신라의 혼란한 정세 속에서 세력을 키운 그는 901년 후고구려를 세우고 송악을 도읍으로 삼았으며, 이후 국호를 마진과 태봉으로 바꾸고 철원으로 천도하였다. 궁예는 강력한 중앙집권 체제를 구축하고 미륵불을 자처하며 새로운 이상 국가를 건설하려 했지만, 말년에는 관심법을 내세워 신하와 백성들을 의심하고 가혹하게 처벌하는 등 폭정을 펼친 것으로 기록되어 있다. 결국 918년 왕건을 비롯한 신하들의 정변으로 왕위에서 쫓겨났으며, 이후 왕건이 고려를 건국하면서 후삼국 통일의 역사가 본격적으로 시작되었다.

Gungye (869-918)

Gung Ye was the king of the short-lived Hugoguryeo on the Korean peninsula. Although he was a member of the Silla royal family, he became a victim of the power struggle among the royal family members during the late 9th century. He became a rebel leader against the unpopular Silla government, which almost abandoned the affairs of their subjects for the struggle for power among royal family members.
