다자이후 텐만구

다자이후 텐만구는 헤이안 시대의 유명 학자·정치가였던 스가와라노 미치자네의 무덤 위에 세워졌다. 미치자네는 정쟁 끝에 교토에서 규슈의 다자이후로 좌천된 뒤 903년에 이곳에서 생을 마감했고, 이후 잇따른 재해가 그의 원한으로 여겨지면서 그를 달래기 위해 신사(텐만구)가 세워졌다. 미치자네는 특히 학문과 지성으로 알려져 있어, 학생·수험생들이 시험 합격·학업 성공을 기원하기 위해 참배하는 장소로 유명하다. 입구에 있는 소 동상의 뿔이나 머리를 만지면 머리가 좋아진다는 속설이 있어서 사람들의 손때가 타 뿔 부분이 금빛으로 반짝인다.

According to legend, Michizane was a gifted student who composed many poems dedicated to his favorite plum trees. Said to be favored by the gods, Michizane raised the ire of the Fujiwara clan, who exiled him to Kyushu. Michizane spent his exile studying, and died at the age of 57. When Michizane died, his body was carried by an ox that stopped near a Buddhist monastery. Unable to move the body along, Michizane was buried there by his follower, Umasake no Yasuyuki, and the shrine was built there. Today, a statue of an ox stands nearby to commemorate the event.
