독립협회 (1896)

독립협회는 1896년 7월 2일 설립된 조선과 대한제국의 시민사회단체이다. 초기에는 사교클럽 형식으로 출발하여 민중계몽단체, 근대적인 정치단체 및 근대적인 정당으로 발전하였다. 1897년에는 서대문구에 청나라로부터의 독립을 기념해 영은문을 헐고 독립문을 세웠다. 1896년 4월 7일 독립신문을 창간한 서재필은 그해 이어 7월 2일, 내부적으로는 민중 스스로 인권과 참정권을 주장하게 하고, 대외적으로는 자주국을 표방, 독립문 건립과 독립공원 조성을 목적으로 독립협회를 창설하였다. 독립협회의 참여자 수가 늘면서 각지의 백성들이 참여하는 만민공동회를 개최하였고, 학생들에게 토론과 타협을 가르치는 협성회를 산하 기관으로 조직, 후원하였다.

Independence Club (1896)

The Independence Association was founded through the initiative of Philip Jaisohn (Seo Jae-pil) on July 2, 1896. At its founding it was recognized by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite some remarkable achievements, by the late nineteenth century Korea found itself wholly unable to resist, or even properly comprehend the encroachments of foreign powers. Japan's recent victory over China had both removed the Chinese from the peninsula and exacted an acknowledgment of Korean independence, but the country's independence was fragile, with Japan, Russia, and other powers vying for influence.
