우장춘 (1898-1959)

우장춘은 일본 도쿄에서 태어난 대한민국의 농생물과학자, 식물학자, 원예육종학자이며 농학박사 및 예비역 대한민국 해군 소령이다. 1945년 8·15 광복 이후 일본에서 한국으로 건너왔으며, 아버지의 오류가 한평생 짐이 되었으나 한국의 식물학과 농학을 이끌었다. 부산광역시에는 그의 업적을 기리는 박물관(우장춘 기념관)이 있다.

Woo Jangchoon

Woo Jang-choon was a Korean-Japanese agricultural scientist and botanist famous for breeding plants. Woo was born and raised in Japan, overcoming poverty and discrimination in Imperial Japan to become a prominent researcher and teacher. When Korea was freed of Japanese rule in 1945, Woo left his family in Japan, and traveled to Korea to lead the country's efforts in botany and agriculture.

우장춘 기념관

세계적 육종학자 우장춘 박사의 탄생 1백주년을 맞아 박사가 생전 연구 활동을 펼친 부산광역시 동래구 온천2동 850-47번지에 건립하고 1999년 10월 21일 개관한 기념관이다. 우리나라 육종학의 변천과정을 알기 쉽게 패널과 모형으로 전시해 청소년학습장으로 손색이 없다. 대지면적 약 1,000㎡(3백여 평), 연건평 241㎡(73평) 규모의 지상 2층 철근 콘크리트 구조로 1, 2층을 전시실로 구성했고 야외마당에는 자유천과 우장춘 박사의 흉상이 잘 다듬어진 조경시설을 짜임새 있게 배치했다. 이곳에서는 매년 8월 10일 우장춘 박사 서거 추모식 행사를 거행하고 있다.

Woo Jangchoon Memorial Hall

The memorial hall built at 850-48, Oncheon 2(i)-dong, Dongnae-gu, Busan, in honor of the 100th birth anniversary of the late Dr. U jangchun well-known to us as worldwide breeding scientist who developed seedless watermelon was opened on Oct. 21, 1999.
