개최국인 아르헨티나가 네덜란드를 연장전 끝에 3-1로 꺾고 우승했다. 한편 이 대회는 호르헤 비델라의 살벌한 군사 독재 정권 체제 아래 국민들과 정치 인사들에 탄압을 가하며 월드컵을 철저하게 독재 정권을 홍보하는 데에 사용했다.

1978 FIFA World Cup
The Cup was won by the Argentine hosts, who defeated the Netherlands 3–1 in the final, after extra time. The final was held at River Plate's home stadium, Estadio Monumental, in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. This win was the first World Cup title for Argentina, who became the fifth team (after Uruguay, Italy, England and West Germany) to be both hosts and world champions. Argentina, the Netherlands and Brazil were the gold, silver and bronze medalists, respectively.
