5·18 광주 민주화 운동 (1980.5.18-27)

5·18 광주 민주화 운동 혹은 광주민중항쟁은 1980년 5월 18일부터 5월 27일까지 광주시민과 전라남도민이 중심이 되어, 조속한 민주 정부 수립, 전두환 보안사령관을 비롯한 신군부 세력의 퇴진 및 계엄령 철폐 등을 요구하며 전개한 대한민국의 민주화 운동이다.

Gwangju Uprising (1980.5.18-27)

The Gwangju Uprising, alternatively called the May 18 Democratic Uprising by UNESCO, and also known as May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, was a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, from May 18 to 27, 1980. Estimates suggest that up to 606 people may have died. During this period, Gwangju citizens took up arms when local Chonnam University students who were demonstrating against the martial law government were fired upon, killed, raped and beaten by government troops.

5·18 민주광장

전남도청 앞부터 시작하여 넓게 뻗어있는 금남로는 광주의 상징이다. 피로써 민주주의를 지켜낸 5·18광주민중항쟁의 현장이다. 1980년 5월 당시 전남도청은 항쟁의 본부였고 앞에 있는 분수대를 연단으로 각종 집회를 열었으며 항쟁의지를 불태웠었다. 이곳은 ’96년부터 5·18민주광장으로 불려지고 있다. 도청 앞에 위치한 상무관은 당시 계엄군의 집단발포로 희생된 시신을 임시 안치했던 곳이다.
