샤멘다오 (沙面島)

사면도는 광저우시 남쪽, 주장(珠江) 위에 떠 있는 인공섬으로 총면적은 겨우 0.3평방미터이지만 역사적 매우 깊은 의미가 있는 지역이다. 이곳은 1861년 이후 영국과 프랑스의 조차지가 되어 각국의 영사관이 설치되었다. 이로 인해 서양식으로 지어진 건물과 교회 등이 많고, 아직까지도 남아있는 것이 있다. 지금도 사면도에는 광저우 주재 미국 영사관이 있어 많은 외국인들이 방문하며, 이 영사관에서 중국인의 미국 이민 비자 문제를 처리한다. 사면도에는 19세기 영국 프랑스 조차지의 풍경을 그대로 담고 있어서 중국의 외교 역사와 문물을 그대로 보존하고 있다. 또한 조선(朝鮮) 시대의 영사관도 남아 있어 우리의 눈길을 끌기에 충분한 지역이기도 한다.

Shamian

Shamian (also romanized as Shameen or Shamin, both from its Cantonese pronunciation) is a sandbank island in the Liwan District of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, China. The island's name literally means "sandy surface" in Chinese. The territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing government in the 19th Century (1859 to 1943). The island is a gazetted historical area that serves as a tranquil reminder of the colonial European period, with quiet pedestrian avenues flanked by trees and lined by historical buildings in various states of upkeep. The island is the location of several hotels, a youth hostel, restaurants and tourist shops selling curios and souvenirs.
