쿠로후네 사건 (페리 원정, 1853)

쿠로후네 사건은 에도 막부가 쇄국 체제를 유지하던 때인 1853년, 미국 해군 제독 매튜 페리가 증기선을 포함한 함대를 이끌고 에도만에 나타나 개항을 요구한 사건을 말한다. 페리 제독은 미국 대통령의 친서를 들고 나타나 포격을 가할 것처럼 위협하며 통상을 요구했다. 당시 에도 시민들은 큰 혼란에 빠졌고, 막부는 강력한 미국의 무력 앞에 일단 친서를 접수하고 "내년에 답을 주겠다"며 시간을 벌었다. 이듬해 페리는 더 많은 7척의 함대를 이끌고 다시 나타났고 결국 압박을 이기지 못한 막부는 미일화친조약(가나가와 조약)을 체결하며 시모다와 하코다테 두 항구를 개항했다. 이 사건은 단순히 항구를 연 것 이상의 엄청난 나비효과를 불러왔다. 강력한 줄 알았던 에도 막부가 서양 오랑캐(이인)의 위협에 굴복하는 모습을 보이자, 전국 각지의 다이묘와 사무라이들이 막부의 무능함을 비판하기 시작했고 "천황을 받들고 오랑캐를 물리치자"는 존왕양이 사상이 급격히 퍼졌다. 특히 요시다 쇼인과 같은 인물들이 이 사건에 자극을 받아 서구 열강을 배우고 막부를 타도해야 한다는 혁명적 사상을 전파하게 된다. 결국 쿠로후네 사건은 이 사건은 200년 넘게 이어져 온 에도 막부의 쇄국 정책을 무너뜨리고 일본 근대화(메이지 유신)의 서막을 여는 결정적 계기가 되었다.

Perry Expedition (1853)

The Perry Expedition was a diplomatic and military expedition to the Tokugawa Shogunate, involving two separate voyages by warships of the United States Navy, which took place during 1853–54. The goals of this expedition included exploration, surveying, and the establishment of diplomatic relations and negotiation of trade agreements with various nations of the region; opening contact with the government of Japan was considered a top priority of the expedition, and was one of the key reasons for its inception.

매슈 페리 (1794-1858)

페리는 미국의 함대사령관이며 그의 형은 올리버 페리이다. 쇄국정책을 펼치던 일본의 에도 시대에 함대를 이끌고 무력시위를 하여 가나가와 조약을 체결하여 일본을 개항시킨 인물이다.

Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858)

Matthew Calbraith Perry was a commodore of the United States Navy who commanded ships in several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican–American War. He played a leading role in the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854. Perry was interested in the education of naval officers and assisted in the development of an apprentice system that helped establish the curriculum at the United States Naval Academy. With the advent of the steam engine, he became a leading advocate of modernizing the U.S. Navy and came to be considered "The Father of the Steam Navy" in the United States.
