이오산 (유황산)

이오우잔은, 과거에는 홋카이도 제일의 유황 채굴량을 자랑한 화산이다. 홋카이도의 선주 민족 아이누의 말로는, 하다카노 야마(벌거벗은 산)로 불리며, 적갈색의 표면을 1500개나 있는 분화구에서 나오는 하얀 분기(분출하는 증기나 가스)가 덮고 있다. 주변에는 유황 냄새가 감돌아, 독특한 분위기를 자아낸다. 또, 고산 식물인 월귤나무 등이, 유황 광산에서는 해발 150m정도의 저지대에서 볼 수 있다. 이오우잔은, 계절에 따라 모습을 바꾸고, 겨울은 눈으로 뒤덮이는데, 그 속에서 분기가 피어 오른다. 6월부터 7월에는 산 기슭에 진달래가 화려하게 핀다. 새하얀 백산차(진달 래과 식물)가 다른 식물과 혼생하지 않고 피어나는 것은 드물게 보기 힘든 귀중한 풍경 이다.

Mt. Io-zan

Mt. Iozan is a volcano with the highest concentration of Sulphur in Japan. The mountain was referred to as "naked mountain" by the local Ainu people, the brownish-red mountain covered by the white steam which boasts over 1,500 large and small volcanic craters. The smell of Sulphur is spread around the area, creating a special atmosphere. You can see alpine plant such as Lingonberry at the 150 m height lowland in Iozan. The mountain changes appearances depends on the seasons; in winter, the mountain is covered with snow and the steam does not stop boasting from the craters. From June till July, the mountain is covered with azaleas. Pure white Azaleas that don’t grow with other plants is such a precious view.
