게이샤는 예능에 종사하는 일본의 전통적인 기생이다. 이들은 전통 음악 연주, 전통 무용 공연, 작시와 같은 여러 가지 일본 예술에 능숙하다. 단순한 매춘부는 아니였지만, 요정이나 여관에 호출되어 시간을 정해 고객의 이야기 상대를 해주거나 노래나 춤으로 흥을 돋구는 일을 하고, 성매매를 하기도 했다.

Geisha

Geisha are Japanese women who study the ancient tradition of art, dance and singing, and are distinctively characterized by traditional costumes and makeup. Contrary to popular belief, geishas are not the Eastern equivalent of the prostitute; a misconception originating in the West due to interactions with oiran, whose traditional dress is similar to that of geisha.
